My mixtape addiction knows no bounds. I am old enough to know better, which makes this all the more fun. I was introduced to much jazz late in life. Here are some of the things I grew to love in a 'shut the outside world out" kind of mix!

McLaughlin in less frenetic form than in Mahavishnu days. Here he explores the Bill Evans songbook. My friend Dick Heckstall-Smith, who played with McLaughlin on Jack Bruce's "Things We Like" improv album said that the best way to understand the work of a jazz master was to "become them for a bit."

Track 4 from Things We Like
Length: 00:04:25
Year: 0000
Track Description:
And here is Jack Bruce, Jon Hiseman, John Mclaughlin and Dick Heckstall-Smith with some studio improv. The background to this is that although mostly known for his rock work, Jack Bruce has always had a jazz association. Whilst all members of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, Jack, Ginger Baker, Graham Bond and Dick heckstall-Smith had experimented with free jazz, making a home recording of something called "The Tube." Just after Jack left Cream, Dick Heckstall-Smith had been asked to put together a free jazz gig at the 100 club in London. he called in Jack Bruce on bass, and Jon Hiseman on drums. Dick and Jon had already started rehearsals for their new band, Colosseum. The gig worked, and Jack put the trio together for a week or so of studio sessions. John McLaughlin was staying with Cream lyricist Pete Brown at the time, and was a bit depressed. He was invited to the sessions to cheer him up. This is worth hearing.
