My fiftieth mixtape on the collective. Stuff I like, explanations of what it means to me, the usual stuff. Music does mean an awful lot to me, and I do enjoy the chance to mouth off about it, so please forgive me if the text runs on a bit.

tracklist

1 Pink Floyd : One of These Days
This song has long been a staple of mine when I need some get up and go. An instrumental that really heralded in the trademark Floyd sound. I can't ever be without this.

2 Mogwai : I Chose Horses
We continue with music that has become part of me in the time I have been at MTC. This particular track seems to sum up everything I love about Mogwai, the beauty and the beast in them perhaps.

4 Blur : This Is a Low
An Atypical and actually rather beautiful Blur track, and I can understand the inspiration for the song. Back in England, just about the last thing you can hear at night on BBC Radio 4 is the Shipping Forecast, a report of strange things which are supposed to help keep ships safe in Britains choppy seas. As a kid, I used to listen to this on my ransistor radio, tucked up in bed, imagining the places the forecast would mention, such as 'Cromarty' and 'Dogger Bite'. Well, so did Damon Albarn, apparently.

5 Pulp : This Is Hardcore
Pulp had enjoyed a run of hit singles in the 90s. Then this came out, bemusing some people. I thought then and think now that it is one of the best things they ever did.

6 Amy Winehouse : You Know I'm No Good
I have been away from England for three years now, and it is inevitable that I have lost touch a little with what is going on at home musically. When I was last there, there was a lot of media excitement about a new crop of young female British singers. Joss Stone was getting attention, but so was Amy Winehouse, who seemed a little more original to me. Since then, she seems to have become more famous for being out of it all over the place, but I have to say that I really like her second album, almost inspite of myself. She seems to have achieved a hard edged almost soul sound with her band, and her vocal performance has some of the self destructive qualities of Billie Holiday in there. Anyway, I have been playing this a lot lately, and in doing so, it helps me feel connected to home, even if that connection is an illusory one.

7 John Martyn : Dealer
Yes, an obscure old British musician who hardly anyone listens to, yet he remains one of my favorite artists. Recording for 40 years now, his music has travelled through folk, blues, reggae and trip-hop influences but has always been distinctive and original. This track features his echo-plex guitar technique and is just wonderful in my eyes. Lyrically, he sings of a drug deal from the perspective of the dealer, saying that he is "Just the spit and polish on a fat man's shiny shoes," and reflecting that "No one needs a dealer just the day before a score."

8 Buddy Guy : Feels Like Rain
I only really listened to this in the last week. Someone at one of my 'help pay teh rent' bottom feeding blues gigs asked if my band knew this. We didn't so I went away and learned it. Buddy Guy is one of the great blues guitarists, but on this song, he delivers a really touching vocal. The whole thing seems to have extra resonance in the light of teh Katrina disaster. (In the song he talks about not being able to make it over Lake Pontchatrain.)He doesn't even play the solo here, I think Bonnie Raitt does, but I wanted to include it here as the latest example of music that sends shivers down my spine.

9 Bob Dylan : Rollin' and Tumblin'
This rootsy bluesy Amaricana steeped Mr Zimmerman of the last three albums is very appealing to me. I have read in some quarters that he has come in for some criticism for messing too much with this particular blues classic, but I really like what he has done with it.

10 Kelly Joe Phelps : Tight To The Jar
For the past ten years or so, Kelly Joe Phelps has been making extraordinary music. From a starting point of a guitar technique which starts off with Robert Johnson and goes further, and a voice to die for, he makes sounds which need to be in my life.

11 Richard Thompson : The Reckless Kind
Another of my hobby horse artists. This man writes great songs, plays great guitar, has a cult following, and that should be enough for me. This is a song about unrequited love, and when I first heard it, I cried as it described pretty much the situation I was in at the time.

13 The Beach Boys : Surf's Up
Brian Wilson's last great masterpiece for The Beach Boys. I make no excuses for listening to old music still. One way something stands the test of time in my book is if I can still find something new in a recording I have heard countless times. This passes the test.
