description:
I am working on a complicated mixtape, but other ideas keep getting in the way, like this one, for instance. This is a mix of songs by bands and artists who write songs inspired b/y dedicated to and sometimes even named after people they like (and occasionally those they don't.) Mostly musicians, but not quite always. As it says on Law and Order, these are their stories.

Track 7 from The Carve Up (Various Artists)
Length: 00:03:15
Year: 1999
Track Description:
A fairly obscure Mogwai track. With a minimalist approach, and not by playing in Drakes style particularly, they do manage to evoke the mood of the man and his music in a way that reduces me to tears. This is simple and beautiful. Simply beautiful in fact.

Track 1 from Solid Air
Length: 00:05:46
Year: 1973
Track Description:
Written and recorded in the early 70's while Drake was still alive, this is Martyn's homage to his friend Drake. Nick Drake was withdrawing from the world to a great extent when this song was written. "I don't know what's going on in your mind, but I know you don't like what you find, living on solid air." The music itself is jazzy, with Martyn's lazy drawl, and some good sax. It actually compliments the Mogwai track really well.

Track Description:
I could have picked 'Song For Bob Dylan' from this album too, but went for Bowie's funny little song for 'Drella. "Andy walking, Andy tired, Andy have a little snooze, wake him when he's fast asleep, take him on a pleasant cruise." How sweet!

Track 2 from The Jesus Of Cool
Length: 00:03:13
Year: 1978
Track Description:
Soon after David Bowie brought out his album "Low" in all it's ambient spendour, (and featuring the song 'Breaking Glass') Nick Lowe responded by bringing out an EP called "Bowi" which contained this song, also a hit single in England. "I love the sound of breaking glass, when there's nothing new." I think this is somewhere inbetween fandom and bitchiness, but I never worked out exactly where inbetween. I did think of also using Lowe's song about a forgotton silent movie star, 'Marie Provost.' It is a true story and not a pleasant one. As that song says, 'She was a winner who became a doggies dinner.' Well, we will stick with DB for now.

Track Description:
There are probably enough Elvis P inspired songs to fill up a mixtape by themselves, but most of them are not very good. This one is a bit formulaic but I love the vocal and the throbbing bassline at the beginning! Someone asked why I hadn't used this track on another mix. Well, I am using it now at least.

Track 12 from Daring Adventures
Length: 00:04:28
Year: 1986
Track Description:
Can this man do a mixtape without including John Martyn and Richard Thompson? The answer is sometimes, but not often. They make music I mostly love. Thompson has written a few songs about people well known in popular culture. I think this is the only one where it is the popular culture of Britain in the 1930's though! Al Bowlly was a band singer, acrooner, who worked the nightclub circuit in Britain in the years leading up to and just after the start of World War 11. He had toured in the US too, working with The Glenn Miller Band. I have heard him sing, and although it is not my music, he had a sweet upper register. Maybe this is what Sting would have sounded like if he had been around then. Anyway, Al Bowlly was doing a gig at Teh Paris De Cafe in London in the early forties when the place was hit by a German bomb and he and many others were killed, hence the title of this song.

Track 7 from Spike
Length: 00:05:44
Year: 1989
Track Description:
Here is a "tribute" that makes 'How Do You Sleep' seem positively loving, and is another example of a song which isn't about a fellow musician. 1989 saw the tenth anniversary of Margaret Thatchers premiership of Great Britain. Elvis, like many by that time, was not a fan of the Iron lady. In this song he promises that when she dies, he will be there to tramp the dirt down on her grave.

Track 1 from Say It Ain't So
Length: 00:04:39
Year: 1970
Track Description:
Another political one, but very different this time. This is a lament almost, telling as it does of the disillusionment of the Russian people on discovering that Joseph Stalin, rather than being a saviour is yet another evil oppressor. At least, that's what my old history teacher said it was about!

Track 14 from Trigger Happy TV (Various Artists)
Length: 00:02:32
Year: 2000
Track Description:
I'd be impressed if they know now! Actually, I did know roughly where he lived, and a friend from the USA wanted me to take her there. Apparently Syd would give away artwork to callers at his house. My feeling was that he stopped being the Syd Barrett who wanted to be in the public eye when he stopped recording, and felt the man should be left alone. The obvious track to come next would be "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" or "Wisjh You Were Here", 2 of the Floyd's tributes to Sid. I like both songs very much, but I didn't think either were right for this mix.

Length: 00:04:16
Year: 0000
Track Description:
There are quite a few versions of this song around, mostly live like this one, but this is certainly the recording I like the best. It features Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Ray's brother, on acoustic and vocal, backed by what sounds like a small gospel choir. The song, written by Art Neville as a tribute to SRV tells us that "Heaven done called another blues stringer back home."

Track Description:
Sonny Terry And Brownie McGhee with a song dedicated to the man who first brought blues to a white audience, following his appearance at Carnegie Hall in the 30's. He got the spot because Robert Johnson, John Hammond's first choice for the concert, had recently died. Apparently Sonny and Brownie hated each other, but sometimes rivallry and antipathy can help create great music. Ask the who!

Finally, a song about one of that other group of superstars worsipped by the mass media. Serial killers. As for Screaming Lord Sutch, he was a pioneer rock singer in the early part of the sixties whose band members proved to be more interesting than him. Jimmy Paige of Zep and Carl Palmer of ELP were in the band at the time of this recording. Later on, Sutch formed a political party called "The Monster Raving Loony Party" that caused a faint smile or two on election day. I'm done. Actually, hang on a minute, I still have 59 seconds to play with, so...
