Something of this nature has been done here before, but I wanted to have a go. Here we have a selection of dead musicians whose music still gets listened to by me. No more, no less. I have tried to pick less obvious but still good tracks, and then it hit me, why not a mix featuring live tracks by dead people. Here we are then.

Track 5 from BBC Sessions (Disc 1)
Length: 00:05:29
Year: 0000
Track Description:
The Experience tackling the old blues standard in live session for the BBC. Two out of three dead people here. Mr Hendrix of course, and poor old Noel Redding, the original Experience bass player. Noel Redding became a bit of a charicature of the old rock star, dragged out on UK TV to talk about the good old days every now and then. I saw him gigging a few years before he died, playing to an audience of about 15 in the Turrets pub, New Southgate. Those that were there (me included) were there for the anecdotes, rather than his latest music.

Track 1 from The Original American Folk Blues Festival (Various Artists)
Length: 00:03:02
Year: 1991
Track Description:
Oh, this track is so wonderful. I had this on a scratchy old album for many years. It was actually recorded by Deutsche Grammaphon in Germany during one of the first ever blues package tours of Europe back in 1962. Every track features blues stars playing with each other, just about all of them now dead. This track has long been a favorite of mine. Memphis Slim plays some driving piano and carries the song along with his vocals, Willie Dixon plays some astonishing stand-up bass, but it is the majestic laid back guitar solo by T-Bone Walker that takes the biscuit, in fact all biscuits ever!

Track 3 from Hundred Year Hall
Length: 00:04:15
Year: 1995
Track Description:
I was never what you would call a Deadhead, but I came to know this song recently when I was asked to learn it to play on stage. This recording is one of the best I have heard of the band. Not only does the ex Mr Garcia feature on this, but Pigpen was still alive and playing when this was recorded. A simple twelve bar romp with a lot less indulgence than usual.

Track 3 from Sometime In New York City (II live jam)
Length: 00:04:40
Year: 0000
Track Description:
A two for one here, as John and Yoko were jamming with Frank Zappa & The Mothers. This is not the "Baby Please Don't Go" song that everyone else sings, but a different oldie. It is a shame that Lennon did so little live work after 1966 as his voice was so well suited to it. Despite some wailing from Yoko in the background, and the band stumbling a little through a song they had patently never tried before, it is pretty wonderful and bluesy. Lennon's voice is hard edged, as is the Zappa solo.

Track 14 from Them or Us
Length: 00:07:32
Year: 1984
Track Description:
Back in the early 70's, Frank Zappa & The Mothers were touring Europe, and were in fact playing in iceland, a gig that was recorded and released as one of the "You Can't Play That On The Radio" series. Anyway, during the show, a guy in the audience shouted out for 'Whippin' Post", the Allman Brothers song in no way associated with Zappa. He milks the situation on stage for all it is worth saying stuff like "Let me see, you want us to tie you to a post?" or something like that. Anyway, 10 years later Zappa does a live album, and there in all it's glory is a straight and really quite wonderful reading of the song. The Icelandic guy got his wish 10 years later!
