description:
My (wonderful / beautiful) girlfriend was begging me for a low-key mix she could listen to when she was working mornings a few months back. After mixing up some of my favourite songs, I gave it to her.

It must have been pretty good, as I ended up having to make three new copies for her -- her coworkers kept stealing it.

...And that's the best mixtaping compliment I've ever received.

Track 1 from Promise of Love
Length: 00:04:27
Year: 2003
Track Description:
I compare the American Analog Set to Cake in that, despite being around for over a decade, very little progress has been made in terms of their sound.

But don't get me wrong, I adore their pulsing beats, smooth-as-silk guitar tone and way-back-in-the-mix vocals.

When the guitar busts out around the 2 minute mark, you can't help but smile.

This song is VAST. It's just a guy pushing some buttons, but it sounds *huge*.

Track Description:
A totally predictable track, it feels almost cookie cutter -- except for that damn high-pitch distortion vocal hook that I can't get enough of.

Blockhead's best work was with Aesop Rock, without a doubt, but this cut is pretty decent, on the whole.

Track 7 from Promise of Love
Length: 00:05:36
Year: 2003
Track Description:
I know it's bad etiquette to put two songs by the same artist on a mix, but screw it -- this song is rad. The brush drumming has this awesome backbeat that really drives the song, creating an immense amount of momentum that is in direct juxtaposition with the songs 'low key' nature.

I don't fool around when I fool around.

Track 5 from Wanna Buy a Monkey?
Length: 00:06:35
Year: 2002
Track Description:
One of the ultimate makeout songs of all time, this gem is simply stunning. So good, in fact, that it blends into the background, and after a minute or two, you forget you're listening to anything at all.

Plus, it's an Automator remix of an Air song, which makes it at least 4 times as badassed.

Track 6 from 1979 EP
Length: 00:04:10
Year: 2001
Track Description:
It may seem out of place, but the low-end of this song ties it in with the mix. Perhaps one of the best baselines ever recorded by the Pumpkins, it's got a nice foot-tapping drive to it.

Never before have I heard such appropriate, sublime drumming.

Track Description:
Again, a Talking Head's track may seem a bit out of place, but the synth fills really flows.

One of my favourite Talking Head cuts, I always associate it with driving the stretch of I-5 between Corvallis and Ashland, because this song always seems to find it's way onto my personal roadtrip mixes.

Track 2 from Ratatat
Length: 00:04:41
Year: 2004
Track Description:
Ratatat is an amazingly underrated bad. The orchestration of the instruments is insane. This song explodes after a 3-minute buildup so slight that you don't even really notice it. When the overdriven guitar kicks in: goosebumps.

This song always makes me smile, without fail.
