description:
Inspired by Immers two mixtapes featuring Scottish artists, I thought I would come up with one featuring Irish performers. I come from England, but have a mixed Irish and Scottish ancestry. Anyway, even if I didn't, this would be fun. A word of warning: If you are looking for a mixtape of traditional Irish tunes, this isn't it! Just a bunch of people I mostly like who come from Ireland. (North or South!)

5 U2 : I Will Follow
I'll follow that with early U2. This was from their first album. I saw them play a year or so before this in a small club in front of maybe 20 people and came to the conclusion that they would never amount to anything!

7 The Pogues : The Band Played Waltzing Matilda
The nearest we get to traditional Irish folk on this mix. Originally called Pogue Mahone (which I believe is Gaelic for 'kiss my arse')used to play at the George Robey every Saturday night in Finsbury Park. They were amongst the most dissolute and enjoyable nights I don't remember!

10 The Saw Doctors : Sing A Powerful Song
Well ok, The Saw Doctors have a working relationship with Ireland's musical past, but like the Pogues, they kind of reinterpreted it!

11 Gary Moore : Driftin'
Gary Moore tends to either do loud rock or blues, but on this, he combines both quite well. The album this comes from is a homage to Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green, and this is one of Green's noisier compositions.

This is fantastic. A truly exceptional mix.

Hothouse Flowers opened for Midnight Oil when I saw them in in 1993, then I only saw them in $0.99 bins at used record shops. I need to listen to The Undertones. Inspiration, you is.
