description:
Ten years ago, I would wake up to the percolation of the coffee machine and the syncopation of the dishwasher. I would wake up to the soft crackle of pancake batter on griddle, to the rapid spring of burnt waffles rushed from their grid-iron home to be buttered and drowned in Safeway® syrup. If the crackles and the springs of joy were nowhere to be found, alas! the glazed donuts would be glistening in the warm kitchen lights. Ten years ago, my family, my youthful family of five, would talk of the wonderful afternoon that would follow that wonderful morning, and of the wonderful dreams that preceded it. Ten years ago, Pinky and the Brain would broadcast on the Warner Brothers network. Ten years ago, there was a Warner Brothers network. Ten years ago I was happy.
Now, I just wake up.
Now, I just wake up.

Track 5 from Happy Songs For Happy People
Length: 00:03:06 Year: 2003 |
|
Track Description:
06:00:00 Ante Meridiem. If there was any sort of alarm clock that would wake one pleasantly, perhaps to the sounds of nature, of a Kodak bear adeptly rustling through water coolers and industrial-sized bags of Ruffles, my alarm clock is not of that variety. At precisely oh-six-hundred hours, it begins its mating call: Beep. Beep. Beep beep beep. Beep beep beep. Beep beep beep beep. Beep beep beep beep. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP click. Silence. SHOW LESS

Track 14 from Billie Holiday's Greatest Hits
Length: 00:03:07 Year: 1994 |
|
Track Description:
06:03:06 Ante Meridiem. I am presented with the first of many choices I will make today. The scene plays out like that of a Choose-Your-Own Story book you'd find at a library circa 1987: "If you choose to awake to the crooning of Billie Holiday, accept the day for what it is, and get to school on time, turn to page 17. If you choose to rebel, sleep in until your parents come to awake you, and place the promptness of yourself and fellow carpoolers in danger, turn to page 12." SHOW LESS

Track 2 from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Length: 00:03:24 Year: 2005 |
|
Track Description:
06:06:13 Ante Meridiem. Not only am I torn between pages 12 and 17 - I might even take a peek at both pages to assure I am not abducted by the FBI/aliens/snow monsters - I am torn between liking this type of music and despising it. The elitist in me asks "Why do C.Y.H.S.Y. (only elitists speak of bands by their initials, mind you) exist?" and the shameless music degenerate in me answers. Philosophical? Hardly, but it helps me muster up the strength to wake up. SHOW LESS

Track 13 from A Sun Came
Length: 00:05:39 Year: 2000 |
|
Track Description:
06:09:37 Ante Meridiem. My morning itinerary is unflinching and self-masochistic by most standards. Wandering is a large part of the first fifteen-or-so minutes. But only because the coffee isn't ready yet. I will take this time to briefly outline the next thirty five minutes: ten minutes of eating and digesting, seven to eight minutes of showering and an additional seven to eight minutes to attend to personal grooming habits, and some hasty self-dressing. Coffee. SHOW LESS

Track 5 from Cabana EP+
Length: 00:03:38 Year: 2004 |
|
Track Description:
06:15:16 Ante Meridiem. The electronic sounds ending the previous track are similar to the electric bleeps and bloops opening this track, and it provides a counterpoint to the percolation of the coffee. Or something. And the pretentious award goes to me. Time for my acceptance speech. I'm beginning to wake up. I enjoy coffee most when it contains six parts coffee, one part low fat milk, and one and a half teaspoons of cane sugar. I don't mess around with coffee. SHOW LESS

Track 9 from A Man and the Blues
Length: 00:02:52 Year: 1987 |
|
Track Description:
06:18:54 Ante Meridiem. Breakfast isn't the most important meal of the day. I can get by without breakfast, and if I turned to page 12 I just might have to. But when I get the chance, I enjoy sitting down with a bowl of breakfast cereal (you may gibe at my hair, my physical appearance, or my eccentricity, but if you gibe at my Froot Loops I will shiv you in the eye), or in this case, buttered toast with boysonberry jam. Mondays are my least favorite day of the week, but something about this cheery pentatonic ditty is endearing. SHOW LESS

Track 3 from The Best Of
Length: 00:02:04 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
06:21:46 Ante Meridiem. When I was a child, I lost myself in the disarray of an Old Navy shopping outlet. There was a booth, resembling that of a 1950's telephone, that was rigged to play songs from an Old Navy compilation album. This was the only song I knew, because of The Brave Little Toaster. I was so terribly alone, and listening to the thirty second clip of this song on repeat kept me stationary until my mother found me. I tend to remember things that never happened. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from Modern Times
Length: 00:07:42 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
06:23:50 Ante Meridiem. Coffee coursing through my veins, gastric juices taking on breakfast portions of behemoth proportions, I begin the arduous process of admulsion. By the time this song has seen its run, I have lathered, rinsed, and if time permits, repeated, and sung to my heart's content. My shower choices strike some to be odd, but you have to understand my bathroom and my parent's bedroom is seperated by paper-thin walls. So Bob Dylan it is. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from Ready for the House
Length: 00:05:04 Year: 1978 |

Track Description:
06:31:32 Ante Meridiem. People who claim Jandek's music is dissonant, pretentious, and elitist have obviously never sung with Jandek in the shower. This is my first choice for shower music if my mother has woken up, which isn't often but is greatly appreciated. Shower time is reflection time, and whatever I did last night I regret at about now. I'd like to think of my guitar playing as Jandekian minus the dissonance, but that's giving myself too much credit. SHOW LESS

Track 2 from The Man in the Turban
Length: 00:03:36 Year: 2004 |

Track Description:
06:31:32 Ante Meridiem. Shaving comes about as naturally to me as impressionist painting comes to an aging cocker spaniel. I suppose most female Man Man fans will contest against this, but Man Man is shaving music. Or at least as close to shaving music as music will ever get. The high school I frequent has a very strict no-facial-hair rule, and I must abide. So on with the lather! on with the razor! off with the hair! off with the moisture! and I look like a new man. Track 10 from Live In Japan
Length: 00:02:59 Year: 2004 |
|
Track Description:
06:35:08 Ante Meridiem. If only this were true. Ruddy skin is on both sides of the family, and if there ain't no recessive gene for clear skin there ain't no dominant one. The title is laughable, no doubt, but there's something fragile about it, like The Microphones have something to prove. Aftershave seems trivial to me; of much greater importance is my prescription skin medicine. But I don't know if that works either. I can't make out the small print on it, it's illegible. SHOW LESS

Track 7 from No Wow
Length: 00:02:27 Year: 2005 |

Track Description:
06:38:07 Ante Meridiem. Underwear, socks, khakis, polo, belt, sweatshirt. I despise uniforms, yet without them I would be wearing the same five shirts every week. By now I've fully assimilated myself into the "awake" culture. I sit on the couch, wait for my ride, and listen to the last of my "security blanket" music - in a few short minutes I'll be exposed to the dangers of car radio. It's been agreed we listen to the "classic rock" station, but sometimes I wish we wouldn't. SHOW LESS
