description:
I travelled to England earlier this year to pick up my fathers ashes. He died last Christmas. I took him to the west coast of Ireland and left his ashes in our favourite lake. I barely knew the man, I moved halfway across the world when I was 12 and had only seen him a couple of times since. I thought I hated his guts, but it turned out I loved him more than I knew I could feel. This is what I listen to when I'm not sure what else to do.

This is a really personal mix for me. I don't think I've even half gotten over the fact that he's actually dead.

My father drank himself to death. I went to England to see him when I heard he was sick. I took literally the next flight to Manchester. When I saw him I didn't recognize him. It's a terrible thing to not know your own father when he's standing right in front of you.

I dream about him a lot. They aren't pretty dreams. They aren't comforting and they don't make me wake up rested. This song is eerily reminiscent of the dreams I have. And, for a little humour, his name was Joe.

Track 3 from Tin Drum
Length: 00:04:34
Year: 1981
Track Description:
My father used to have a white 1970 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith. It's a rare car. I had never seen another. While I was driving through England on my way to catch the ferry in Wales, I stopped at the house I grew up in. I was standing in the driveway feeling overwhelmed when my cousin started yelling at me to look. An old man drove slowly by me in a white 1970 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith. I don't know if I believe in anything, but if I did, I would have said that was him. Maybe they do watch us.

This is a rather brutal song. I wonder if he thought he was a waste. When I saw him last year it seemed as such. He was quiet and shrunken. Before that, he had always been loud, a character. Then he seemed like a frightened, frail old man.

Track 3 from Hoodoo
Length: 00:03:56
Year: 1991
Track Description:
"Under these fingertips a strange body rolls and dips
I close my eyes and you're here again
Later as day descends
I'll shout from my window
To anyone listening, "I'm losing"

Who can take your place?
I can't face another day
And who will shelter me?
It's cold in here
Cover me

Oh in a plague of hateful questioning
Tap dancing every syllable from ear to ear
I hear the din of lovers jousting
When I'm hiding with my head to the wall

Who will shelter me?
It's cold in here"

Brilliant. And an incredible voice to boot.

Track 4 from The Gold And Silver Days II
Length: 00:04:38
Year: 0000
Track Description:
This is the hardest song in the world for me to listen to. It was my fathers very favourite song. For most of the older generation Irish, it's a favourite song. When I went with my aunt to scatter his ashes in Lake Furness, some old family friends I hadn't seen since I was a small child came with us. It's a very rural area and these are hard drinking sheep farmers who don't show a lot of emotion. They stood in a circle and sang this song as my father floated away. It was beautiful. I stood by the water and became hysterical.

It's amazing to me that someone can push feelings of sorrow into something so simple (like making a mixtape), but I guess thats why we all love music. It's always been an art available to everyone, throughout time. It costs nothing (unless your buying it, but surely whistling is free), and is rather simply and crudely made when you compare to the weight of things and emotions you feel upon listening to it on that certain moment. So really I guess I'm amazed not that sorrow can go into something so simple (or any emotion), but that something so small and simple has even the capacity to hold not only the music, but the memories of your father...or not just the memories...but his spirit.

im sorry for your loss
great tape
