Since I fulfilled my metal fix with my first mix, I thought I would throw this one out there.
If I'm in a crappy mood, there isn't anything more cathartic than listening to people who are in more foul moods than me. For some people, listening to depressing music just puts them in a bad mood...for me, it makes the grasses greener and world a better place...a better place full of unhappy, miserable people. It's awesome.

Maynard's vocals on this track are amazing...the variation in dynamics, notes and emotion is awe-inspiring. As much as I might get flamed for this, this song is a perfect example of why I like APC way more than Tool. SHOW LESS

Track 19 from Bottle of Humans
Length: 00:03:41 Year: 1999 |
|
Track Description:
Written as a self-deprecating piece about regretting his move to San Francisco to pursue his music career, Sole indulges in self-whining and misery to the maximum extent. This guy is a pro at it, I've never heard someone give themselves so many backhanded compliments or downright make fun of themselves as much as this guy. So, if I'm going to wallow in my own whining, I might as well do it listening to someone so brutally honest you almost feel bad for the guy. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Being a NIN fan since the ripe age of 11, I never thought I would hear anyone sound more depressed than Reznor on "The Downward Spiral"'s Hurt, that is until I heard it by Cash. It brought a whole new meaning to the song for me, and it is simply put: amazing. SHOW LESS

Track 10 from Sindustries
Length: 00:06:19 Year: 2000 |
|
Track Description:
I got this album in Spring of 2001, a few months before my brother passed away. Although there is nothing spectacular about the album, it is pretty solid Swedish Death Metal. Anyway, this song always connected with me. It is probably one of the only Death Metal Ballads you'll ever hear. Despite any cheese present, the acoustic guitar playing is wonderful, and Jim Kjell's vocals are strikingly honest and hard-hitting (it's a shame he quit doing music after this album...it's rare that a death metal vocalist "makes" the band). Track Description:
This song is a tough one for me, because I've always thought it was an amazing song...until it was nearly ruined by Puffy P.Diddy Puff Dad whatever the hell he goes by these days...the "artist" formerly known as crap. Anyway, I still can't really listen to it much anymore because of that travesty, but I shouldn't give Puffy the satisfaction of ruining an otherwise good song by an amazing band. SHOW LESS

Track 5 from Pretty Hate Machine
Length: 00:05:54 Year: 1989 |
|
Track Description:
Nine Inch Nails was the first band I ever really listened to. I can still remember picking up 'The Downward Spiral' in 5th grade and hiding it from my parents for fear of having it taken away. Anyway, even though I was pint-sized and didn't have the slightest clue about what most of the songs meant, I ate up all the NIN I could. This song is the ultimate in 'downer songs', both lyrically and musically. The sparse piano combined with Reznor's pain-filled vocals...well, listening can remind you that no matter how bad your life is...it most certainly can't be as bad as his. SHOW LESS

Track 6 from The Sound of Perseverance
Length: 00:03:42 Year: 1998 |
|
Track Description:
Ignore the fact that Death is one of the forefathers of American Death Metal. This instrumental track taken from the band's last album (a few years before frontman/songwriter/lead guitarist Chuck Shuldiner's death) is an amazing piece of music. Comprised primarily of acoustic guitar and harsh guitar leads. This song is undeniably emotional. The guitar melodies are raw and piercing; for me they reflect some intangible vulnerability coming through the music (probably due to my dream of being able to play amazing butt-rock guitar solos). Anyway, I'm sure that for 99% of you, Death's music would be too abrasive and harsh...but you should still check out this song. SHOW LESS

Track 10 from In Absentia
Length: 00:04:15 Year: 2002 |
|
Track Description:
Steven Wilson's songwriting for me treads the thin line between genuine and contrived. I'm sure this is probably due to the inordinate amount of pretense surrounding the music. Anyway, every once in awhile, he manages to write a song that really connects with me. The mood and feel is almost a burden to listen to with sadness so tangible you just wanna fly to the UK and give the guy a hug. If I had a list of the top 10 breakup songs, this one would be near the top. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Not a big Pantera fan for the most part (used to be way back in high school). To save the long-winded explanation, the song as a whole is pretty good, for once, Phil Anselmo doesn't sound like a giant tool. However, the entire reason this song is on here is for Dimebag's guitar playing in the last 45 seconds. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from The Eye of Every Storm
Length: 00:06:09 Year: 2004 |
|
Track Description:
Neurosis have an uncanny ability to convey strong emotion through discordant music. Although they have mellowed over the years and dare I say it, become more melodic...they are still perfectly fine singing off-key and gravelly, passed the point of 'bad singing' to being just plain brilliant singing. Although the song deals primarily with spiritual and religious undertones, it is powerful enough to be worthy of my listening whenever I'm feeling down. SHOW LESS
